There are lots of benefits to having herb gardens.  They can create a wonderful aroma when all the different smells mix together and catch your nose as you walk past; they give you an instant and ongoing source of fresh herbs to use whenever you need them; and they are also relatively easy to grow.

If herb gardens is what you want to get busy on, you will need to decide whether you want one indoors or outdoors.  Indoor ones are good, but if you have a reasonable size garden then having herb gardens outdoors can be your best choice.

When do You Begin?

The best place to start is by having a look round to see where herb gardens could be created.  If space is short, why not have more than one and make each individual one smaller? You can also use window boxes for your herb gardens.  This is ideal and has the advantage of not only being close to the place where you do all your cooking, but it gives you a wonderful aroma every time you open your kitchen window too.

You can create herb gardens in regular flower beds, but you should be aware that some herbs can spread further than others, and are more aggressive as a result. One example is the mint, it tends to be quite invasive and may end up taking over the other plants if it isn’t planted separately.  For this reason, if you want to put it in a bed, make sure you plant it inside a pot and sink the pot into the ground first. This way you can avoid the strangling of other plants and keep in within a small area.

Choosing Your Herbs

There are a wide variety of choices when it comes to deciding what your herb gardens are going to contain.  Do some research on herb garden information and find which herbs you tend to like and which ones are the most versatile as well.

Parsley is a good item to have in herb gardens as well as chives and mint.  While all herbs tend to be much the same shade of green, they all have their own shape so it’s good to choose a mixture that looks good when they grow together as well.Positioning Chives at the back would be good since they are tall and straight. With practice, you are sure to have an herb garden that looks great and tastes just as good.

Child With Handful of Garden Slugs
Image by Pink Sherbet Photography via Flickr

Looking back to when I was a kid I remember NOT enjoying gardening so much. It was too much like work and I wanted to play with friends. But, I will say that the experience taught me things that stuck with me for the 40 years it took for me to own a place to plant a garden.

Apparently, we can see how nature is treated these days.  It is a sad thing to know that people do not pay attention so much anymore to the environmental problems.  What can we do about this?  It’s as simple as starting with the children.

It is good to see the children’s involvement with environment-friendly activities. One such nature-loving activity that children could easily get their hands on is gardening. Why should you consider gardening for your children?

Here are the benefits that gardening could easily provide the children with:

1.  Science

In planting, children are indirectly taught the wonders of science like the plant’s life cycle and how human’s intervention can break or make the environment.  They can have a first hand experience on the miracle of life through a seed.  This would definitely be a new and enjoyable experience for the kids.

2.  Life

Watching a seed grow into a tree is just as wondrous as the conception to birth and growth of a child.  In time, kids will learn to love their plants and appreciate the life in them. Gardening could actually help simulate how life should be treated — it should be with care. The necessities to live will be emphasized to kids with the help of gardening – water, sunlight, air, soil. Those necessities could easily be corresponded to human necessities, i.e., water, shelter, air, food.  By simply weeding out, one could educate how bad influences should be avoided to be able to live life smoothly.

3.  Relaxation

Studies show that gardening can reduce stress because of its calming effect. This is applicable to any age group.  More so, it stimulates all the five senses.  Believe it or not, gardening may be used as therapy to children who have been abused or those who are members of broken homes.  It helps build one’s self-esteem.

4.  Quality Time with the Family

You can forget about your stressful work life for a while be soothed by the lovely ambience in the garden.  You can play and spend quality time with your children.  You can talk while watering the plants or you can work quietly beside each other.  The bottom line is, always do what you have to do, together with your kids.  You might discover a lot of new things about your child while mingling with them in your garden.

Let kids become aware of their environment’s needs. And one way to jumpstart that environmental education may be through gardening.  It’s hitting two birds with one stone — teach them to respect life while you bond with them.

Herb Gardening

Herbs have been around since time immemorial and served different kinds of purposes. They have been used to treat illness and flavour cooking; they were even believed to have magical powers.  Do you want to have your own herb garden?  Here are a few ideas on how to establish an herb garden.

Plan your garden.

Consider the herbs you want to plant.  Think about their types.  Would you like annuals, biennials or perennials?

How much space will they occupy in your garden?  If you want, you can purchase a book that can give you the right information on what specific plants you are planning to grow.

List or draw your garden on paper first.  Separate the annuals from the perennials so when the time comes that you have to pull out the annuals, you won’t be disturbing the perennials.  Perennials can be planted on the edge of your garden so when it is time to till your garden they won’t be in danger of getting dug up.

Another thing to remember is that you have to plant the tall ones at the back and the shorter ones in front.  Also, provide your plants with enough space to grow. Proper position shall help you in this area.

If you would rather keep herbs out of your garden (and some are quite invasive) you could have herb pots. These are large containers with three or more outlets for the herbs. Fill the pot up to the first outlet and plant it before continuing on with the filling and planting process. Usually, the herb that requires the most water is planted in the bottom hole, while the variety that requires the least, goes in the highest hole.

Some Design Ideas

You can consider having a square herb bed.  You can have your square bed divided into four by two paths crossing at mid point measuring 3 feet.  You can border it with stone or brick.  A wooden ladder may also do the trick.  You can lay it down on your garden and plant your herbs between its rungs.  You can also choose to have a wagon wheel bed.  Planting here is like planting with the wooden ladders.  Plant your herbs in between the wagon wheel’s wedges.

Get Your Plants Growing

Of course, different plants have different needs, but many of them require alkaline soil.  This is the reason why you have to determine the herbs you want to plant in the planning stage.  This can more or less help you find out how you should care for your plants.  If you germinate your herbs from seeds, remember to follow the directions on the packet for soil, watering and temperature.

Herbs are some of the easiest plants to grow. You just have to provide them with an effective drainage, sunlight, enough humidity or moisture and fertile soil.  Even with just minimally meeting these requirements they will be bound produce a good harvest.

Protect Yourself With Garden Gloves

Vermicompost
Image via Wikipedia

My sister is one of the most overcautious, over-prepared people I have ever met. She won’t even step out into her garden without gardening gloves, a hat, extra sunscreen, overalls, heavy boots, and a host of other protective gear!

She says that she is scared of poisonous spiders that live in the area, but in reality the spiders are so rare that there is almost no chance of getting bitten.

On the other hand, up until recently, I had never put on a gardening glove in my life. Spending time in my flower and vegetable garden was a great way to just enjoy the weather, feeling the texture of the different plants against my hands and the dirt beneath my feet.

I figured that garden gloves would ruin the experience for me, so I put up with the occasional sting from a thistle. It seemed like a small price to pay for communing with nature. Then one day, I found a new weed in my garden. It had fine, hair like spines on it’s stem, but they looked so thin that I figured they would not do anything to me.

I didn’t bother to put on a gardening glove, but instead just grabbed for the thistle. At first, nothing happened. I pulled it out, threw it on the weed pile, and kept on working. Soon, however, I started to notice an itchy feeling in my hand. I ignored it for a while, but it got worse and worse. When I looked at it, my hand was all swollen up.

Whatever I had pulled out had stung me bad! I was getting an allergic reaction to it, and it was so bad that I considered going to the hospital. Since then, you can bet that I was keep a gardening glove nearby! I don’t wear them every day, but when I am doing serious weeding, I put my gloves on.

The gardening gloves are just another tool that is available to you, and like all tools, it has its uses. I still firmly believe that some gardening should be done without a gardening glove. You can learn a lot from the texture of the dirt, the feel of your plants, and other sensations you get while gardening. But sometimes, garden gloves are completely indispensable. After all, weeds have some good adaptations to stop you from pulling them out. The only way to beat their stingers and strong roots is with a trowel and a gardening glove.
