Pests can be a serious issue for the majority of home gardeners. A few varieties of insects can destroy a crop. For some bugs it takes only a couple of hours!

Let’s take a look at some of the most common vegetable garden insects.

We will take a minute to check out how to distinguish them, and a way for getting of eliminating them.

1. Garden Pest: Aphids

The Aphid is an extremely common vegetable garden pest in most places. You will most often spot clusters of these kinds of tiny soft bodied pests in various colours.

They might be red.

How To Rid Your Vegetable Garden of Aphids

1. For most people, they find the Aphids and destroy them manually by removing and destroying the leaf they are on. If the entire plant is infested you can pick them off and get rid of them.

2. Using Neem Oil is a great method to rid yourself of Aphids in your gardens. Another is to use insecticidal soap.

3. I personally think using Lady Bugs to get rid of Aphids is a pretty cool method, plus I love watching Lady Bugs in action.

2. Garden Pest: Beetles

There are a lot of beetles that like to munch on your veggie garden. There are specialized beetles for most veggies, such as potato beetles. There is a rather lengthy list of them meaning you’re going to need to focus on each type of beetle for the remedy that will get rid of them.

Beetles may be cute but they can also be quite annoying when you see all the leaves they can munch down in a day. They’re not so cute after that.

You can pick beetles off by hand if you have a small garden. However if you’re looking at too many to hand pick then you can spray your plants with an insecticide that poisons them.

3. Garden Pest: Borers

Borers get into the stems of plants like melons, squashes, cucumbers, and pumpkins and eats them until they can’t get any more nutrition from Mother Earth. I first noticed it wasn’t growing as fast as the other squash and then I noticed the leaves wilting even while the ground was moist. I knew something was a foot. You have to cut the borers out of the plants. If the borer is found at the base, you’ll have to destroy the whole plant. You can use insecticide to try to prevent these.

4. Garden Pest: Grubs

I noticed my strawberries, on the north side of our property, weren’t doing so well. I decided to transplant some to the south side of the yard where they would get a lot more direct sun. That’s when I discovered dozens of big fat white grubs hiding under my strawberries. I am sure I found at least one with each shovel full of dirt.

Beetle grubs dig through the dirt, munchinging on roots and veggie matter. The grubs consume the spores along with particles of soil and other material. The spores germinate inside the grubs, and multiply rapidly in their blood. When the bacteria become very numerous in the blood they again form spores, completing the bacterial cycle.

5. Garden Pest: Cutworms

Cutworms usually cut off the plant stem at the base of the plant. The only effective way to control these is to use a paper collar on your plants about an inch below and above ground level. These bugs usually infest cabbages, peppers, and tomatoes.

6. Garden Pest: Corn Earworm

Corn earworms will eat the kernels off of the cobs while the corn is still on the stalk.

You can use a drop or two of corn oil or mineral oil on the tip of the ear of corn. Also be sure to destroy the entire plants at the end of the year. Don’t leave any part in the ground.

7. Garden Pest: Slugs

My first year growing zucchinnis I encountered problems with slugs. I tried getting them drunk on beer hoping they would fall in the bowl and drown but that didn’t seem to work. I think my neighbour was out after dark drinking my beer. So I went out and bought a package of Slug-B-Gone and they soon were.

8. Garden Pest: Tomato Hornworm

Tomato hornworms are one of the scariest looking garden pests. They eat the leaves and fruits of tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants. They are large, fat, green and white worms that look like caterpillars.

Because they have rather large horns they look scary so I wear gloves while picking them off my plants. I tend to stomp on them but you can also put them in soapy water where they will drown. I think it’s quicker to step on them. You could use neem oil on them as well.

Ecological gardening appeals to some individuals as it sounds significant. It makes gardening sound exotic, like it’s on some higher level. organic gardening is accomplished by avoiding the use of laboratory-made fertilizers, growth substances, antibiotics, or pesticides.

This means using nature’s tools to grow your plants, fruits, and vegetables. It’s a technique of being more kind to the earth. Using natural insecticides is part of that process and has become increasingly popular. If done properly, it costs less.

You can use nature to your advantage if you understand and take the time to make it work for you. If you learn to grown or produce your own insecticides, you’re also aiding the eco-system by not putting man-made lethal concoctions into the dirt and air. You can help to reduce the negative result on the ozone layer by playing your part to help nature.

Botanical is of plants. Plants are natural. So, botanical insecticides are naturally created from plants and plant parts. One such insecticide is sabadilla. It’s gotten from the seeds of a plant like a lily and utilized in dust or spray form before crop. It poisons insects when it touches them or gets inside their bodies.

Natural insecticides must still be used with caution. They are not without complications or issues. You must learn how to use them properly so that they’re a benefit and not a hindrance. Washing your fruit and vegetables is still endorsed before eating them or using them in cooking if you use natural insecticides

A misconception about insecticides of any kind can be that if you use a stronger concentration and/or more of it, the benefits will come quicker and will last longer. But this is an unhealthy attitude in many cases. If a technique or product isn’t working, make a change only by being aware of the effects. What you want might be a different product or an additional helper to go with it.

Some of the natural insecticides that are well-known are pyrethrum, nicotine, sabadilla, rotenone, and soap. Cornmeal and some hot peppers can also be effective against insect pests.

It’s still best to try and catch any gardening or crop pests in the beginning stages than to load up on insecticide of any kind. The best control can be awareness and early removal.

Deciding on a way to make topsoil better can depend on the existing quality of the topsoil, however, there are several ways to do this.

One of the most useful things for the gardener to learn is to understand the workings of what is known as topsoil balance. Topsoil balance is a way of understanding the physics and chemistry of the soil. It includes understanding topsoil physics, chemistry and biology which help to make sure that the topsoil’s structure, nutrients and biology are all balanced perfectly.

The Mikhail system is well-known for topsoil balance maintenance. This system of topsoil balancing focuses firstly on the soil’s structure which enables good friability and topsoil composition so that living organisms can flourish. Topsoil needs a skeleton to enable the other elements of its make-up to exist and be sustained, rather like the human body. Topsoil needs essential chemical elements such as Hydrogen, Potassium, Sodium, Magnesium and Calcium.

The Mikhail system then helps to ensure that the nutrients and biology of the topsoil is in order. The structure then also needs to be balanced. Essential elements for plant nutrition are Phosphorous, Potassium, Nitrogen and Sulphur. Fertilizers can be added to provide a needed nutrient boost once the topsoil structure has been improved. Most general garden fertilizers are based on NPK, which provides these essential chemical elements. Topsoils also need to have the correct levels of trace elements.

Testing the topsoil is the best way to discover exactly what is missing, what isn’t and how improvements can be made. This can be done using testing kits for soil, which will provide the necessary information for the gardener. Once tested, the soil can then be improved by making the necessary changes to by adding fertilizer, lime and any other improvers that are required.

Position is anything and is among the most wonderful vegetable garden tips given to fledgling gardeners who still have quite a bit to gain knowledge of. You will want a plotted area with much sun exposure as well as soil that is at the suitable pH levels for maximum effect. To ensure that the pH levels are correctly maintained, a soil sample should be taken and tested using digital moisture meter or other moisture test meter for the soil.

Planning Organic Vegetable Gardening in New Brunswick

Have desire to grow your own vegetable garden? We went for many years before we were in a situation where we could have our own vegetable garden and now we do and I just double the size from last year.

Learning a few things about vegetable gardening will make the task more enjoyable, to the point where it may well become your favourite hobbies.

Follow a few steps before you plant anything and you will have a healthier vegetable garden with less work.

Steps To Planting Your First Garden

1. Location, Location, Location

Location is important. You need sunlight and good drainage. These are two vital components to a good veggie garden. Anything else you need for your garden can be added.

Steer clear of trees if possible as their roots can rob nutrients from the soil and in the summer their branches can over shade your garden, blocking that vital sunlight. Like our first vegetable garden.

2. Preparing The Soil

Our vegetable garden used to be part of our lawn and the soil beneath the turf was very dense clay that wouldn’t drain for days after a heavy rain. But we wanted a vegetable garden so that didn’t stop us.

First we removed the sod with as little dirt as possible. We even let it dry in the yard so we could pound the excess dirt off it.

Next I dug the entire plot to about a foot deep and mixed in fresh topsoil we have from composting and also added a few bags of peatmoss to help break the soil into something workable.

We tested the garden once we had added the compost and peatmoss to see how well it drained and found we had improved it considerable. So now it drains in hours instead of days.

3. Know Your Local Planting Zones

There are a lot of vegetables one can grow but you need to decide what you like the most, making sure it will grow in your growing zone. For this you can look up the growing zones for where you live.

We live in New Brunswick Canada so we looked that up along with the phrase ‘growing zone’ or ‘vegetable growing zone’.

Note: We decided we wanted to grow a few things that needed a longer growing periods, so I started those inside a couple of months early so they were well started before planting them outside.

4. How to Maintain Your Vegetable Garden

A vegetable garden doesn’t maintain itself very well and will soon be taken over by weeds if not watched. Keep a head of the weeds and it becomes rather easy to maintain. On the other hand leave it for a week or two and you may start to see the vegetable plants start to suffer.

We have our rows of vegetables running north to south for a couple of reasons.

We wanted each plant to get as much sun as possible.

Our garden is on a slight incline so we planted the rows so that the rain would not erode the garden.

I mentioned this but it’s important so I will mention it again. Your vegetable garden must drain well or your veggie roots will drown the plants.

We added compost and peatmoss but we also set the rows so the water would drain but not erode the garden.

5. Know Your Garden Pests

Take the time to learn about the pest that like what you grow so you can learn how to control pests organically.

Completing each task doesn’t take too long, especially when it’s planned. We on the other hand didn’t learn before we started our first vegetable garden. Instead I just started digging in so we ended up with a lot more work than we needed so learn from my mistakes and plan your vegetable garden before planting it and happy gardening.

We love home gardening but I must say that nothing is more disgusting that sticking your fingers in a flower bed or veggie garden only to come out with cat poo on them. Yuk!!

Heck we don’t even have a cat.

They can get so bad that even the birds don’t want to hang around our yard much anymore. Something has to be done about it, without harming the culprits of course.

We aren’t cat haters, just not cat lovers. Not sure about our pitbull Honey though, she goes wild when a cat enters our property. Really not sure if she wants to play or if she is thinking about dinner.

The method we use has to be GREEN as we try to be organic gardeners and have no desire to harm anything.

Method One: Using Tin Pie Plates To Scare The Cats

My wife tried using tin pie plates to scare the cats off but I think the only one annoyed was me as I work from home and my office is facing the backyard where all the pie plates are. So that didn’t work so well.

Plus the plates are very reflective being made of shiny tin so every time the wind blew while the sun was up I would be blinded by the reflections.

That method didn’t work at all other than to keep me from open the window because of the noise and leaving the blinds down because of the reflections.

Cats 1 – Humans 0

So now I’m checking out Amazon for answers to our cat problems.

1. Shake Away 20-ounce Cat Repellent Coyote/Fox Urine

GREEN: 100% Organic and safe. Does not harm the cats you are repelling.

Shake Away Product Features

Easy To Use – Just sprinkle on ground and watch it work

Safe -Completely organic, safe around kids & pets

Goes to work immediately, last for weeks

Uses Animals’ Strongest Repellent – FEAR!

It WORKS – Money Back Guarantee

The Shake Away granules have an odor that signals danger to all pest critters and are less messy than liquid. The think a predator is about and stay away. No one gets hurt, just scared.

You can be comforted knowing the patented formula won’t burn your plants, bushes or trees. Plus the heavy granules won’t wash away in rain so they last longer. They won’t evaporate or freeze like liquid either.

The 20oz container will put down a line of protection up to 600 feet long. Applying as instructed, this container will protect an area up to 20 by 30 feet for a month.

No more stinky fingers or pie plates.

2. Contech CatStop Ultrasonic Outdoor Cat Deterrent

Now you can protect your garden, plants even the sandbox while staying green. No chemicals. You won’t need fences to keep cats out now.

How The CatStop Works

When cats come within range, the CatStop automatic outdoor cat deterrent emits a sudden burst of ultrasonic sound. The sound startles cats, and teaches them to stay away.

Installing the CatStop is pretty easy. Just place the CatStop in the garden or outdoor area that you want to protect, and it’s ready to go. How simple is that?

The CatStop will work for about 3-4 months on just one 9 volt battery but you can purchase an adapter so the battery isn’t needed.

Everything esle is automatic.

It may only take one visit from a neighbourhood cat and you will not see them again. They learn that your yard or garden is a place they won’t have a good experience, without hurting them of course.

CatStop Specifications

Growing a garden filled with plants and flowers is a true pleasure . You take care of them, watch over them and get to see them blossom into their edible pleasure.

But sometimes it gets tricky. One of the earliest things to look for should be the acidity or alkalinity of your garden by using a soil pH meter.

Why Test Your Soil pH?

The health of your plants is highly dependent on the pH balance of the area in which they are planted. It is correct that the majority of plants like a neutral pH (which is around 7) but others, like blueberries love more acid soil. Monitoring carefully the pH of the soil is important because:

It can help you determine what to plant in your garden

Or whether or not you need to adjust the pH of your garden to grow what you want

Certain plant diseases like it at different pH levels

The pH level affects the availability of nutrients to your plants

What Can You Do If Soil pH Is Not What You Want?

There are a couple of quick fixes that a gardener of any experience can do. If you find that you soil is too acid, you can incorporate lime to your soil to increase the pH, or use wood ash from your log burner (also known as potash fertilizer). If you find that your soil is too alkaline, compost of manure can be used to bring the pH more neutral.

Remember though that changing the acidity of your soil is a process that takes time. It is advisable to test and align the pH of your soil either in the fall or early spring.

Though it may seem like such a trivial thing, you may find that just by simply testing your garden using soil pH test kits and adjusting it accordingly, that your flower blooms grow larger and more vibrant and that the fruits of your garden also become larger and taste better.

Organic gardening is becoming a lot more popular as people become more aware of the chemicals that are used in conventional food production. It can be a little trickier than chemical-based gardening, but it’s worth it in the end.

If you’re new to growing plants this way, these gardening tips could help you increase your chances of success.

1. Start with the basics.

Don’t be tempted to spend an enormous amount of money on your first supplies, materials, and tools. There’s no such thing as a magic bullet, and you’ll only end up with very expensive vegetables.

Organic gardening can actually be done much less expensively than conventional gardening.

Compost, manure, and other soil additives replace expensive fertilizer, and natural control methods keep pest levels down.

2. Grow your plants in the right spot.

Take the time to plan which vegetables you’ll be growing and find out what kind of sunlight requirements they have.

Take the time to find an area of your yard that will provide the amount of light and the soil qualities that these plants need.

The right conditions can help you avoid many problems before they even begin.

3. Prepare the soil correctly.

Check the pH, moistness, and type of soil you have available, then add amendments to make it what you need.

You might need to add in compost, animal manures, grass clippings, ashes, or other substances to improve the condition of your soil. This might seem like a lot of work to start with, but it will help your garden grow, and will keep on working for you down the line. Setup of an organic garden is the hardest part.

4. Start your own compost pile.

Compost can be purchased cheaply, but you don’t know what goes into it.

Composting your own kitchen scraps and yard waste can help you dispose of these substances cheaply and in an ecologically friendly way, plus you’ll get great free fertilizer that you know is organic.

You’ll be amazed at the difference that a good compost pile can make for your garden. Composting might seem like it’s a complicated process, but it really isn’t. Almost anyone can do it.

5. Don’t ignore your garden.

Once you’ve tilled and planted your organic garden, it can be extremely tempting to ignore it. This isn’t a good idea in conventional gardens, either, but it can be disastrous if you’re growing organic.

A little daily weeding and pest removal, a careful check over all plants, and some regular attention will do more to help your garden than any product you can buy. If you take the time to love your garden, you’ll be rewarded with wonderful results.

It is also about doing pest control naturally too without using the commercial insecticides. The pest control is a combination of beneficial insects and natural solutions to keep pests away without spraying harmful chemicals.

Growing organically might be becoming more popular today, but it has actually been around since the beginning of gardening. Chemical fertilizers did not come on the scene until the 1840s. Farming and gardening since then has been more chemically based than organically based. In recent times though it has been found that all these chemicals are harming our environment, they are also used in greenhouses. It is now being recommended that you return to using organic fertilizers for the health of your soil and the environment.

There are many benefits to gardening organically:

The food that is grown this way has more nutrients and vitamins in them to help one fight off diseases. You are also not ingesting as many chemicals eating organically-grown food. No growth hormone, pesticides, chemical fertilizers and no added preservatives or flavoring are used either.

Studies have proven that children have a much lower level in pesticides in their systems when they eat organic foods compared to food grown using other methods. Food grown organically gets delivered to the market with all of its nutrients intake. This food taste much better too.

Doing gardening is much more enjoyable to do organically too.

You don’t have to protect yourself while working with dangerous chemicals. This makes gardening much more satisfying to do. It is a great way to relax or get your daily exercise too. Gardening can even be a type of therapy for people to become more emotionally fit along with improving the overall fitness of the body. Any regular physical activity including gardening lowers your risk for obesity, certain types of diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, heart disease, and stroke.

Gardening organically can bring out your inner child. Remember your childhood when you played in the sandbox or made mud pies in the rain? Digging in the dirt and planting flowers or vegetables give you this same fun feeling that you had as a child.

organic gardening is no more expensive to do than any other gardening method:

If you are buying your fertilizers both types cost about the same. But if you do your own composting of you kitchen and garden scraps this can cut down on how much fertilizers are needed.

Through the use of beneficial bugs the pesticides will not be needed as much and possibly eliminated all together. This is a natural way to control many garden pests. Many times just planting the right plants enables the plants to fight off pests, also plant or use natural elements that fight off the pest too, such as cucumber peels keep ants away.

There are many methods for gardening available today.

Not all of the methods use the synthetic or chemical fertilizers and pesticides. You can work in harmony with nature and have a luscious garden, by doing it organically.

Amongst global warming and the deficiency of government regulations concerning our food supply the reactivity of learning about how to grow organic vegetables is ever-increasing.

Organic horticulture is merely a way of growing your fruits and vegetables with things found in nature. Traditional organic gardening however is labor intensive and time consuming. Eco-gardening is a better method, producing more food with less work. With the correct vegetable garden layout and companion planting techniques, today’s gardener can have a thriving garden in about 8 hours of work per year.

Why would one want to indulge in organic eco-gardening?

1. One can with no trouble make compost from garden and kitchen waste. Though compost gardening is a bit more time-consuming than buying prepared chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it surely helps to put garbage to good use and helps save the environment.

2. organic gardening means no chemicals that might cause you damage. With fruit and vegetable rising, this is critical. Pesticides on our fruits and vegetables are poisonous and should be avoided whenever possible particularly in children.

On average, children ingest four to five times the amount of cancer-causing pesticides from food than adults. This can lead to numerous diseases later on in the child’s lifespan. organic gardening helps to lessen these risks.

Remember, pesticides have toxins that have only one intention – to kill living things.

3. With organic gardening there is less harm to the environment. Our waterways are polluted with poisons from traditional gardening that utilize pesticides; killing fish and destroying their habitat.

4. Organic gardening helps keep erosion of topsoil.

Every year an estimated 30 to 32 billion tons of soil erodes from US farmlands alone, according to the Soil Conservation Service.

5. Lower costs. There is no need to get high prices chemical fertilizers and pesticides when you garden with organic methods. Many organic recipes for the control of pest and disease come straight from the kitchen cupboard. Now and then other plants can be grown as companions to the chief crop. For example marigolds can help repel aphids from many vegetables.

To make an inexpensive spray for garden pests, mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil. Put 3 tablespoons of this in one quart of water then spray on any infected plants.

6. A simple mulch of pine needles will help to subdue the development of weeds as well as holding the moisture in.

7. Organic gardening methods help to keep the environment safe for succeeding generations.
