How Does Composting Work?

It is the breakdown of tissues and compounds into simpler substances, which act as soil nutrients.
Put a pile of leaves, a cardboard box and a watermelon in your back yard, exposed to the elements, and they will eventually decompose.

How long each takes to break down depends on a number of factors:
o	What are the materials made of
o	How much surface area is exposed
o	The availability of moisture and air

Organic Materials

Backyard composting is a process designed to speed up the breakdown or decomposing of organic materials. Let us take a closer look at how we manipulate the process and speed things up.

Here I use the term microbes, which include microscopic organisms and worms amongst a whole slew of “things.” Microbes live in the soil; they are the key to composting. Normally, they eat small tidbits of organic matter such as leaves and twigs that nature provides. The more these microbes have to eat the more efficient they can work. A lot of the things you call waste – for example, banana peels, rotten apples, brown wilted lettuce, fallen leaves and weeds from your garden – are food for these microbes. Meat products should not be used.

Nitrogen Inside Foods

If a compost pile or compost bin smells it is because of meat products. They will eventually break down, but meat slows down the composting process. Microbes need carbon and nitrogen.

Some things high in carbon include paper, sawdust, wood chips, straw, and leaves.

Some things high in nitrogen include food, grass clippings, and manures. Be sure to include a mixture of wastes high in nitrogen in your compost pile. The smaller the chunks are the faster they will break down. So cut up that apple. Break up those twigs, your compost pile will reward you for your effort.

Surface Microorganisms

The more surface area the microorganisms have to work on, the faster the materials will decompose. It is like a block of ice in the sun: slow to melt when it is large, but melting very quickly when broken into smaller pieces. Chopping your garden wastes with a shovel or a machete, or running them through a shredding machine or lawnmower will increase their surface area, thus speeding up your composting

Sufficient air in the pile encourages microbial growth and speeds decomposition. We have all had the experience of smelling a mass of wet grass clippings

Ability For Air To Get Inside

Be sure your compost container had holes to allow air to get into the compost pile. These microbes need air to survive. If possible, stir or turn your compost pile every week or so to let in more air. If you do not get enough air into your compost pile, other organisms take over and give off a nasty. They also work a lot slower. I think you would prefer in your compost pile! Also, wet your compost pile. Your compost pile should be about as moist as a sponge that has just been wrung out. If there is not much rainfall, add water to your compost pile.

Air Temperature Inside Compost Bin

Compost piles should range in temperatures of about 90 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit or 32 to 60 degrees Celsius. Higher temperatures produce will kill major disease organisms and fly larvae, help kill weed seeds, and provide a good environment for the most effective decomposer organisms If the temperature is too low in your compost pile, many of your microbes will die, and those other microorganisms will take over. You know the slow smelly ones.

How Heating Affects Creating Soil Compost

The plant matter will require heat and moisture for quick breakdown. The summer sun will provide the heat, but it will be the gardener’s responsibility to soak the compost area from time to time for the moisture.

Size Of Compost Pile

If your compost pile is too small, it will be cold. The best way to keep it warm is to build a pile at least three feet x three feet x three feet (one meter x one meter x one meter).
Extremes of sun, wind, or rain can adversely affect this balance in your pile.

Understanding For Effective Composting

Understanding these key factors when composting allows for efficient, quick break down of kitchen and yard wastes, turning them into “Black Gold”!

Conclusion: If you supply all these things – food, air, and moisture in a good-sized pile – You will get your compost in about six weeks. The larger the pile the longer it will take. A poorly attended compost pile can take years to decompose.

Amongst global warming and the deficiency of government regulations concerning our food supply the reactivity of learning about how to grow organic vegetables is ever-increasing.

Organic horticulture is merely a way of growing your fruits and vegetables with things found in nature. Traditional organic gardening however is labor intensive and time consuming. Eco-gardening is a better method, producing more food with less work. With the correct vegetable garden layout and companion planting techniques, today’s gardener can have a thriving garden in about 8 hours of work per year.

Why would one want to indulge in organic eco-gardening?

1. One can with no trouble make compost from garden and kitchen waste. Though compost gardening is a bit more time-consuming than buying prepared chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it surely helps to put garbage to good use and helps save the environment.

2. Organic gardening means no chemicals that might cause you damage. With fruit and vegetable rising, this is critical. Pesticides on our fruits and vegetables are poisonous and should be avoided whenever possible particularly in children.

On average, children ingest four to five times the amount of cancer-causing pesticides from food than adults. This can lead to numerous diseases later on in the child’s lifespan. Organic gardening helps to lessen these risks.

Remember, pesticides have toxins that have only one intention – to kill living things.

3. With organic gardening there is less harm to the environment. Our waterways are polluted with poisons from traditional gardening that utilize pesticides; killing fish and destroying their habitat.

4. Organic gardening helps keep erosion of topsoil.

Every year an estimated 30 to 32 billion tons of soil erodes from US farmlands alone, according to the Soil Conservation Service.

5. Lower costs. There is no need to get high prices chemical fertilizers and pesticides when you garden with organic methods. Many organic recipes for the control of pest and disease come straight from the kitchen cupboard. Now and then other plants can be grown as companions to the chief crop. For example marigolds can help repel aphids from many vegetables.

To make an inexpensive spray for garden pests, mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil. Put 3 tablespoons of this in one quart of water then spray on any infected plants.

6. A simple mulch of pine needles will help to subdue the development of weeds as well as holding the moisture in.

7. Organic gardening methods help to keep the environment safe for succeeding generations.

Although many people like the idea of being self sustained and committing to growing your own vegetables, they think that it is a very hard process to carry out.

The truth is although you might need to spend a large amount of time setting things up at the beginning, the daily maintenance of your crop really doesn’t take too long. Often the other concern is the amount of space that growing vegetables can take up but there are a number of ways around this. Applying for a local council allotment could be one solution and there are a number of space saving raised garden beds available on the market to fit into the smallest of gardens. If you are thinking of growing your own vegetables then take a look at some of the best reasons to start planting seeds in your garden.

1. For The Fresh Organic Taste - You can’t beat the taste of fresh, organically grown vegetables. Vegetables bought from a shop have often been transported over long distances before they even make it in to a shop. This means that you rarely get to taste them when they are truly fresh and a lot of the flavour is lost.
2. To Avoid The Use Of Unknown Pesticides – It is hard for any company to guarantee that no pesticides or other chemicals have been used on the plants and soil the vegetables are grown in. Obviously pesticides are useful for protecting crops from being destroyed by pests and disease but it is unclear as to how much they effect the taste of your food. You can control what you put on your crops to make sure you know exactly what you are getting.
3. To Encourage Your Children To Eat More Healthy – Encouraging children to try new vegetables can typically be a challenge. Getting your children involved with the process of growing fruit and vegetables will get them more interested in tasting different types of food they have helped to grow. This is a great way to help promote healthy eating in your children from a young age.
4. For The Health Benefits – Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables every day is a great way to get everything you need to keep yourself healthy. You will often find that people who grow their own vegetables will tend to eat more of them, more often. There is also the added benefit that digging the garden and spending the time outside will be good exercise and will help to increase your fitness.

5. Reduce Your Supermarket Bill - One thing that is obvious is that by planting vegetables you will save money on your food shopping. Supermarkets tend to have special offers on packs of carrots and other veg, which often means you buy more than you need. The problem with this is that vegetables often have a short shelf life so they often end up being thrown away before you have a chance to use them. Therefore growing your own will help you to avoid wasteful spending.

Blueberries are popular for clean eating, pies, jams, jellies, syrups, juice, and baked goods for example blueberry muffins, pancakes and waffles. But, these are also baked into squash dishes and coffee cakes. For household use, fresh blueberries freeze well unwashed, dry and unsweetened. People really like the way they do not stick to each other soon after being frozen like other berries, and pour out of their freezer containers like frosty marbles. My youngsters loved to freeze blueberries in modest person freezer bags, then grab a bag all over the coming months to snack on.

It is stated that in blueberry season, bears will eat absolutely nothing else except ripe blueberries, and that they are going to travel as significantly as fifteen miles per day on an empty stomach to get a blueberry patch. Both bears and birds have lengthy loved the blueberry, leading a single little blueberry farm in Southampton, Massachusetts to name itself “Bird Haven Blueberry Farm.” They protect their berries through the birds, and successfully market blueberries as U-pick, fresh-picked, frozen, and in jellies, jams and pies.

Because blueberries grow in the south on the north, most locations can come across kinds that suit their household garden or farm. Yet, there are also a couple of reports of single species generating well. “Rubel” is believed to be among the first wild blueberries chosen from your wild for commercial breeding, and will still be bought and grown. It is reportedly higher in anti-oxidants than other industrial blueberries. The European bilberry and even wild huckleberries can even be purchased for increasing in gardens.

Whether we know it or not, most of us are familiar using the genus Vaccinium because it has among its members various present or prospective industrial crops, such as blueberry, cranberry, bilberry and huckleberry. Vaccinium delavayi, however, is strictly ornamental and incredibly unlikely to be our next export success.
Vaccinium delavayi takes its unique name, like a lot of Chinese plants, from your French Jesuit missionary Abbé Jean Marie Delavay (1838-95), who discovered the plant and launched it to cultivation. He was also responsible for these kinds of well-known plants as Abies delavayi, Magnolia delavayi and Osmanthus delavayi reaching our gardens.
Vaccinium delavayi, a native of Burma and south-west China, is really a hardy evergreen shrub with small, rounded leaves which have been tough and leathery. In spring it produces clusters of small, bell-shaped to almost globular, white flowers that open from pink buds. The flowers are quite much inside style of Pieris, Gaultheria, Andromeda and many other closely associated genera from the erica family.
They are just like modest blueberries and have a comparable flavour but are rather acidic unless really ripe. While it seems a shame to select the berries, you may too due to the fact the birds may have no this sort of reservations.
While scarcely a spectacular plant, Vaccinium delavayi is attractive all through the 12 months and is always interesting, regardless of whether in flower, fruit or just as a neat foliage plant. It is an perfect specimen for a rockery or partially shaded corner. It grows to about 45cm high × 60cm wide and may be kept trimmed to some small mound. However, any pruning will adversely have an impact on either the flowering or fruiting.
As any blueberry grower will tell you, Vaccinium plants favor acidic soil conditions. The modest ornamental species are most at residence when grown with other erica family members factories just like dwarf rhododendrons, evergreen azaleas, ericas, callunas and pieris.
The native New Zealand Gaultheria species are exciting vegetation to combine with Vaccinium delavayi.
Other little native berrying plants, especially individuals in the epacris family, also make very good companions. An alpine rockery with great berrying types of Pentachondra pumila, Leucopogon fraseri, Cyathodes empetrifolia, Gaultheria crassa and Vaccinium delavayi could be full of interest and colour all through the year.
Try looking within the perennials in addition to between the shrubs, as it is typically sold at an extremely small dimension and tends to obtain lumped in while using the rockery perennials.

Compost, produced from decomposed grass clippings, leaves, twigs, and branches, becomes a dark, crumbly mixture of organic matter.

Understand how composting functions. Even a newbie to composting can make excellent top quality compost. It could be compared to cooking as art or component science. The following 7 elements will help you master the art of composting.

1. Components
Following a time anything that was as soon as alive will naturally decompose. But, not all organic and natural items must be composted for your house. To prepare compost, organic material, microorganisms, air, h2o, and a tiny sum of nitrogen are required.

These products are risk-free to compost at residence:
* grass clippings
* trimmings from hedges
* vegetable scraps
* leaves
* potting soil that has grown old
* twigs
* coffee filters with coffee grounds
* tea bags
* weeds which have not went to seed
* plant stalks

These products aren’t safe to compost at home:
* weeds which have went to seed
* dead animals
* pet feces
* bread and grains
* meat
* grease
* cooking oil
* oily foods
*diseased plants

2. What To Do To create It Work
You will find little forms of plant and animal existence which break down the organic and natural substance. This life is known as microorganisms. From a minute quantity of garden soil or manure comes a lot of microorganisms.

Nitrogen, air, and h2o will supply a favorable environment for that microorganisms to produce the compost. Air circulation and drinking water will maintain the microorganisms wholesome and working. The nitrogen feeds the tiny organisms. You may need to add a tiny quantity of nitrogen for the pile.

Putting on too much nitrogen can kill microbes and too a lot h2o causes insufficient air inside the pile. You just can not add as well a lot air.

3. Helpful Microorganisms
Bacteria are the most successful compost makers in your compost pile. They are the first to break down plant tissue. Then comes the fungi and protozoans to help with the procedure. The arthropodes, like centipedes, beetles, millipedes and worms, bring in the finishing touches to complete the composting.

4. Smaller is Much better
The materials will break down more quickly if the microorganisms have a lot more surface region to eat. Chopping your garden supplies with a chipper, shredder, or lawnmower can help them decompose faster.

five. Size of the Pile
The activity of millions of microorganisms generates heat within the compost pile but a minimum size 3-foot by 3-foot by 3-foot is necessary for any hot, fast composting pile. Piles which have been any larger might hamper the air supply required inside the pile for that microorganisms.

6. Moisture and Aeration
If you are able to imagine a wet squeezed out sponge with its many air pockets, then this would be the perfect enviroment for the microorganisms within the pile to function at their best. Pay attention although your pile is composting, towards the quantity of rain or a drought you may possibly have. H2o inside a drought and maybe turn the pile inside a lot of rainy days. The extremes of these two may possibly upset the balance from the pile. The use of a pitchfork would come in handy at this time.

7. Temperature and Time
Retain your pile between 110F and 160F and the helpful bacteria will love it. Not as well cool nor as well hot.
The temperature will rise more than several days if you retain a great ratio of carbon and nitrogen, sustain lots of surface area within a big volume of material, and preserve adequate moisture and aeration.

-Importance of Compost-

+Compost has nutrients, but it is not a full fertilizer.

+Compost offers nutrients within the soil until plants require to use them.

+ It loosens and aerates clay soils

+ Retains h2o in sandy soils.

-Using the Compost-

+ A soil amendment, mix 2 to five inches of compost into gardens each year prior to planting.

+ A potting mixture, add 1 portion compost to two parts potting soil.

+ Make your own potting mixture by utilizing equal parts of compost and sand or perlite.

+ A mulch, prodcast 2 to 4 inches of compost close to annual flowers and vegetables, and up to five inches around your trees and shrubs.

+ A top dressing, mix finely sifted compost with sand and sprinkle evenly above lawns.

The final factor I would suggest as soon as you have mastered the art of composting is to appear very seriously at making your very personal aerated compost tea. This elixir will give you outcomes that are difficult to believe.

If you intend to grow a vegetable garden it is a nice idea to think about adding some fruit to your plans. You’ll find there is nothing simpler to plant than a few blackberry bushes.

The next time you are out walking be on the lookout for them. They’re easy to spot once you understand what to look for. Their most individual trait is the thorns that reach from their branches. It is useful to remember where you have seen the blackberry bushes in order that you are able to pick the tasty berries which they supply. The fruits normally ripen on the plants in towards the end of the summer. They come into flower with sweet-smelling white flowers in the spring. Blackberry bushes can be found throughout North America and many additional countries with an appropriate environment. They yield the very best berries if found in the full sun, although you can come across them located in shaded places also.

Blackberry bushes can often be found close to raspberry bushes in the wild. Although wild blackberry bushes produce smaller berries than the blackberry bushes you plant from the nursery, the wild berries tend to be sweeter. It is important to watch for poison ivy which frequently grows within the same areas as blackberry bushes. Poison Ivy rash is the price that many berry pickers pay when trying to pick the berries.

The situation of natural blackberry bushes were marked and remembered by the Native Americans so that they could harvest them each year. They used the berries as food, but in addition they used them to dye animal skins to make a richer, darker colour.

The first settlers used blackberries to treat a number of illnesses. They were particularly useful for respiratory illnesses and coughing. The fruit is also used to produce a rich colored, sweet wine by lots of people who like to produce home made wines. The overall favourite use for these sweet, delicious berries, though, is blackberry jam. They also make a delicious pie, if you do not mind the seeds.

If you are thinking of growing blackberries in your yard it is best to place them along the parameter where there isn’t a lot of people traffic. This is to avoid being scratched by the sharp, long thorns. The bushes must be pruned after they are done fruiting. They need to be trimmed back to about 18″ above the ground. This is done to prevent them from growing the taller runners that are inclined to have more thorns than berries on them.

If you’re going to plant several bushes be sure you allow enough space so that you don’t get so scratched when picking the fruits. Regardless of how near the bushes are to each other picking blackberries is a job that requires wearing a long-sleeved shirt. Blackberry bushes also have a long life span so you’ll want to keep this in mind when picking an area to plant them.

Should you be thinking about g rowing tomatoes, no matter whether it’s for the earnings of selling them, or just for having your own fresh tomatoes accessible, you are probably pondering if you ought to plant heirloom tomatoes or maybe hybrid tomatoes.

Heirloom tomato plants are tomatoes which have been in cultivation for a minimum of half a century. Of course, these kind of tomatoes ended up being entirely unique and also limited to primarily 1 and / or two home gardens within the past. This approach made these kinds of tomatoes quite hard to find and attractive to home gardeners that wished to maintain the traditional feature of the heirloom tomato.

Hybrid tomatoes will be tomatoes which were cross-pollinated by way of 2 or more types. This method helps to make the hybrids much more resistant to pests and diseases.

There are actually major differences concerning both of these different kinds of tomatoes. For example, heritage tomatoes possess a more satisfying taste when compared with hybrids. They also have fewer seeds, and come in a significant number of colors, sizes, and textures. In hybrid tomatoes, the flavour suffered, in addition to they aren’t nearly as scrumptious. In addition, considering heirloom tomato plants are open-pollinated, you may preserve the seeds every single year rather than requiring you to purchase new hybrid tomato seeds each and every year.

You will find a couple of drawbacks to raising heirlooms, however. The primary problem is that heirloom tomatoes are certainly not resistant to major tomato diseases or unwanted insects. In addition they usually do not have as much fruit as the hybrids can.

Here are a few heirloom tomato varities:

Big Rainbow – One of dozens of big fruited yellow-colored tomatoes having red swirls, which has a mild, sweet flavor. Hillbilly, below, is another.
