I have only been vegetable gardening for a couple of years but we are learning every year. This past summer we tried our hand at growing Summer Squash, Buttercup Squash and Zucchini. The experience was a good one even though we didn’t get a lot of squash as I kinda grew them all too close together. I call that a learning experience and by next spring we will have a garden three times the size to accommodate the quantity we would like to grow.

I learned after I had already planted them but I should have planed the squash plants about 3 to 4 feet apart. Now don’t laugh at me but I planted all mine about a foot apart and it didn’t take long before they just became one big pile of leaves. I’m surprised we got any results that were positive but we did and I am happy for this year. Next year I will give them a chance to impress me even more.

The blossoms are very tasty when you fill them with cheese, batter them and deep fry them. Mmmm good

I think that I will be able to start digging up our new garden and making the raised beds for our summer squash while it’s cool in the fall. Last year I waited until spring and it got really hot early so I didn’t get to increase the size of my vegetable garden like had planned. Usually here in New Brunswick we get late frost but not this year. So it’s going to get done this fall.

If you are a nature lover, one thing that you love to look at is the color green and talking about green- it’s abundant, it’s everywhere, it’s the color of nature, it’s a plant! If you are planning to convert the vacant yard into a bountiful healthy aromatic garden, then it will be fun. Growing herbs is not only for remedies, it can also be used in some culinary purposes and it beautifies your surrounding or it can refresh your time.

If you want to try gardening as a hobby, a thyme garden is a very good start for you. Later on, you can figure it out that it is worthy especially if they grow abundantly. Like any other ventures, your first move in aiming for a herbal gardening is looking for the possible site wherein you can let them grow, whether you decide to put in the vacant space at your backyard, or in a large pots or recyclable containers. All of these are possible. Try to do soil examination first if it is suitable for your herbs. Soil should not be too dry or too wet because the roots cannot absorbed proper nutrients and water necessary for their growth. If the area is elevated, try to do some terracing to allow the water to stay and to flow normally. Too elevated areas are prone to surface run-off thus causing the top soil to be eroded, the top layer of the soil contains the most nutrients needed by the plant. If you don’t really have good land areas, you can just plant then in large pots or raising beds.

Plant needs sunlight, water, air, and fertilizer in order to ensure that you can have bountiful crops. Put them in an area where the exact amount of sunlight can let in. Water them regularly and try to cultivate them once in a while. Water them at least twice a day and if you think that the amount of rainfall is not enough. Your herbs also need air to grow. They breathe through their leaves and air is very crucial in pollination, especially if you have a flowering herb garden, butterflies and other insects can easily trace it through their scent. And enough fertilizers are necessary for them to grow, better go into organic fertilizers because they are pure in composition and do not contain excessive chemicals.

The benefits of a well maintained garden is really worth it. Make sure to plant appropriate plant on your garden because some plants are temperature sensitive. Wedding weeds from your vegetable plant is also crucial, weeds compete on the nutrients and water, attract harmful pests and a carrier of diseases, making your plant sick. These are only some dos in caring for your herb garden. Proper care for growing herbs is the secret of a successful herb gardening.

Kathryn D. Burrows has a Chinese herbalist relative and has taken a deep interest in herbs and herb gardening. She started growing herbs in her own backyard for fun and realized that it was so much more than a hobby.

Why build compost piles?

A compost pile will help you refresh your garden as well as allowing you to reduce the rate of garbage that you put into the landfills. By taking just a little bit of time out of your day, you can ensure that you never run out of fertilizer and that you are doing your part to help the environment. Even better, when you start looking into it, you will find that a compost pile is much easier to put together than you might think, even easier than building a other composting supplies!

How To Start Building A Compost Pile

Start by choosing a site for your compost that is near to both your kitchen and your yard. Some exposure to the sun is handy, but make sure that it does not get too much light, as this can dry it out. Some people recommend putting your compost pile in the shade of a tree, with a base of concrete or brick to make sure that that tree is not the only one getting the nutrients. Though it is not necessary, a plastic bin can keep your compost contained and looking neater. You can even create a “corral” for your compost pile using stiff wire mesh. Though the bin can be open on the sides, you will find that a roof is necessary to keep off the rain and to keep the compost from getting flooded.

Green compost materials are materials that are rich in nitrogen, and they include things like grass cuttings, raw vegetable peelings, tea bags, manure from horses or cows or young weeds without seeds.

Get familiar with green compost materials and brown compost materials.

They will decompose very quickly. Brown compost materials, on the other hand, are rich in carbon and will decompose much more slowly.

Some material that are good for brown compost include cardboard, paper, bedding from vegetarian pets, or even sawdust and wood chips.

When you go to combine these materials, you are essentially looking for a combination of one part green to two parts brown compost.

Combining Green and Brown Compost Together

To get started, start throwing in one shovel of green compost, top it off with two shovels of brown compost and then mix them.

Repeat until you have a pile that is roughly three feet high, by three feet wide, by three feet long. A composting pile of this size generates enough heat to break down fairly quickly.

Finally, throw on some finished soil compost or some garden soil to help get things going.

Make sure that you water your compost regularly;

It should feel like a damp sponge or a wrung out rag. It should also be turned once a week to keep it loose. Within about two months, you are going to have humus, which is the result from the decomposition, and this is going to be perfect for your garden!

Take a moment to think about your garden and the waste that you create that can go into a compost pile. This is a great addition to any green-minded gardener’s garden, so see what it can do for you!

Are you looking to plant your very own vegetable garden but you’re not sure how to get started? Planting a healthy vegetable garden provides so many benefits including an abundance of healthy organic food and saving thousands on your grocery bills. I don’t know about you but I still remember the days when a tomato from the supermarket tasted like a tomato, not anymore unfortunately. Let’s look at some vegetable gardening for beginners tips to help get you started today.

Vegetable Gardening For Beginners – Tips
Preparation is the key to growing a beautiful and healthy vegetable garden. Planning is critical for setting up a vegetable garden that you can harvest every daily. Vegetable gardening for beginners does not have to be difficult with the correct planning.

First you must decide on your plot, the area for your garden. The ideal spot is somewhere that receives plenty of morning sun and protection from the elements such as wind. Although you maybe limited with the space you have available don’t be discouraged as you will be shocked at how much you can grow by maximizing the space you have. Ensure there is sufficient drainage for water run off.

Importance Of Soil Quality
One of the most common vegetable gardening for beginners tips you will hear is never underestimate soil quality. Soil is the life line of a garden do not underestimate it’s importance. You must ensure that your soil preparations include checking the soil and preparing it by testing its pH levels. The ideal pH level for your soil is 6.5, if you do not have a test kit you can go to your local garden outlet and let them test it for you.

Don’t stress if your levels are out of whack for the moment, you can purchase garden lime that will improve the pH levels of your soil. In a nutshell your pH levels will determine how much nutrients your vegetables will be able to receive.

Preparing Your Plot
Dig your plot and turn your soil over, ensure you dig into a depth of about 12″ (30cm) and remove any weeds you find by hand. Avoid using weed killers and they can effect your soil structure and levels. Once your pH levels are in healthy range, wait 4-5 weeks before you begin planting.

The vegetables that you grow will dependent on where you live. Speak to your gardening outlet that will buy seedlings from for the most suitable vegetables.
Ask about purchasing some organic fertilizer which will be the life blood of your garden. Organic fertilizers such as animal manure, blood and bones as well as compost are terrific choices for providing essential nutrients and moisture.

Growing Vegetables Year Round
The key to planting a successful garden is to have vegetables that you can harvest year round. By doing this you can rotate different vegetables to help ensure the health of your gardening by limiting pests and diseases. One of the most common vegetable gardening for beginners mistakes is insufficient planning and set up process.

If you set up your garden correctly you will have vegetables that you can harvest every single day. With the right planning your garden should require very maintenance and upkeep as it continues to provide fresh, organic food for you and your family for years to come.

Amongst global warming and the deficiency of government regulations concerning our food supply the reactivity of learning about how to grow organic vegetables is ever-increasing.

Organic horticulture is merely a way of growing your fruits and vegetables with things found in nature. Traditional organic gardening however is labor intensive and time consuming. Eco-gardening is a better method, producing more food with less work. With the correct vegetable garden layout and companion planting techniques, today’s gardener can have a thriving garden in about 8 hours of work per year.

Why would one want to indulge in organic eco-gardening?

1. One can with no trouble make compost from garden and kitchen waste. Though compost gardening is a bit more time-consuming than buying prepared chemical pesticides and fertilizers, it surely helps to put garbage to good use and helps save the environment.

2. Organic gardening means no chemicals that might cause you damage. With fruit and vegetable rising, this is critical. Pesticides on our fruits and vegetables are poisonous and should be avoided whenever possible particularly in children.

On average, children ingest four to five times the amount of cancer-causing pesticides from food than adults. This can lead to numerous diseases later on in the child’s lifespan. Organic gardening helps to lessen these risks.

Remember, pesticides have toxins that have only one intention – to kill living things.

3. With organic gardening there is less harm to the environment. Our waterways are polluted with poisons from traditional gardening that utilize pesticides; killing fish and destroying their habitat.

4. Organic gardening helps keep erosion of topsoil.

Every year an estimated 30 to 32 billion tons of soil erodes from US farmlands alone, according to the Soil Conservation Service.

5. Lower costs. There is no need to get high prices chemical fertilizers and pesticides when you garden with organic methods. Many organic recipes for the control of pest and disease come straight from the kitchen cupboard. Now and then other plants can be grown as companions to the chief crop. For example marigolds can help repel aphids from many vegetables.

To make an inexpensive spray for garden pests, mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil. Put 3 tablespoons of this in one quart of water then spray on any infected plants.

6. A simple mulch of pine needles will help to subdue the development of weeds as well as holding the moisture in.

7. Organic gardening methods help to keep the environment safe for succeeding generations.

Although many people like the idea of being self sustained and committing to growing your own vegetables, they think that it is a very hard process to carry out.

The truth is although you might need to spend a large amount of time setting things up at the beginning, the daily maintenance of your crop really doesn’t take too long. Often the other concern is the amount of space that growing vegetables can take up but there are a number of ways around this. Applying for a local council allotment could be one solution and there are a number of space saving raised garden beds available on the market to fit into the smallest of gardens. If you are thinking of growing your own vegetables then take a look at some of the best reasons to start planting seeds in your garden.

1. For The Fresh Organic Taste - You can’t beat the taste of fresh, organically grown vegetables. Vegetables bought from a shop have often been transported over long distances before they even make it in to a shop. This means that you rarely get to taste them when they are truly fresh and a lot of the flavour is lost.
2. To Avoid The Use Of Unknown Pesticides – It is hard for any company to guarantee that no pesticides or other chemicals have been used on the plants and soil the vegetables are grown in. Obviously pesticides are useful for protecting crops from being destroyed by pests and disease but it is unclear as to how much they effect the taste of your food. You can control what you put on your crops to make sure you know exactly what you are getting.
3. To Encourage Your Children To Eat More Healthy – Encouraging children to try new vegetables can typically be a challenge. Getting your children involved with the process of growing fruit and vegetables will get them more interested in tasting different types of food they have helped to grow. This is a great way to help promote healthy eating in your children from a young age.
4. For The Health Benefits – Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables every day is a great way to get everything you need to keep yourself healthy. You will often find that people who grow their own vegetables will tend to eat more of them, more often. There is also the added benefit that digging the garden and spending the time outside will be good exercise and will help to increase your fitness.

5. Reduce Your Supermarket Bill - One thing that is obvious is that by planting vegetables you will save money on your food shopping. Supermarkets tend to have special offers on packs of carrots and other veg, which often means you buy more than you need. The problem with this is that vegetables often have a short shelf life so they often end up being thrown away before you have a chance to use them. Therefore growing your own will help you to avoid wasteful spending.

Blueberries are popular for clean eating, pies, jams, jellies, syrups, juice, and baked goods for example blueberry muffins, pancakes and waffles. But, these are also baked into squash dishes and coffee cakes. For household use, fresh blueberries freeze well unwashed, dry and unsweetened. People really like the way they do not stick to each other soon after being frozen like other berries, and pour out of their freezer containers like frosty marbles. My youngsters loved to freeze blueberries in modest person freezer bags, then grab a bag all over the coming months to snack on.

It is stated that in blueberry season, bears will eat absolutely nothing else except ripe blueberries, and that they are going to travel as significantly as fifteen miles per day on an empty stomach to get a blueberry patch. Both bears and birds have lengthy loved the blueberry, leading a single little blueberry farm in Southampton, Massachusetts to name itself “Bird Haven Blueberry Farm.” They protect their berries through the birds, and successfully market blueberries as U-pick, fresh-picked, frozen, and in jellies, jams and pies.

Because blueberries grow in the south on the north, most locations can come across kinds that suit their household garden or farm. Yet, there are also a couple of reports of single species generating well. “Rubel” is believed to be among the first wild blueberries chosen from your wild for commercial breeding, and will still be bought and grown. It is reportedly higher in anti-oxidants than other industrial blueberries. The European bilberry and even wild huckleberries can even be purchased for increasing in gardens.

Whether we know it or not, most of us are familiar using the genus Vaccinium because it has among its members various present or prospective industrial crops, such as blueberry, cranberry, bilberry and huckleberry. Vaccinium delavayi, however, is strictly ornamental and incredibly unlikely to be our next export success.
Vaccinium delavayi takes its unique name, like a lot of Chinese plants, from your French Jesuit missionary Abbé Jean Marie Delavay (1838-95), who discovered the plant and launched it to cultivation. He was also responsible for these kinds of well-known plants as Abies delavayi, Magnolia delavayi and Osmanthus delavayi reaching our gardens.
Vaccinium delavayi, a native of Burma and south-west China, is really a hardy evergreen shrub with small, rounded leaves which have been tough and leathery. In spring it produces clusters of small, bell-shaped to almost globular, white flowers that open from pink buds. The flowers are quite much inside style of Pieris, Gaultheria, Andromeda and many other closely associated genera from the erica family.
They are just like modest blueberries and have a comparable flavour but are rather acidic unless really ripe. While it seems a shame to select the berries, you may too due to the fact the birds may have no this sort of reservations.
While scarcely a spectacular plant, Vaccinium delavayi is attractive all through the 12 months and is always interesting, regardless of whether in flower, fruit or just as a neat foliage plant. It is an perfect specimen for a rockery or partially shaded corner. It grows to about 45cm high × 60cm wide and may be kept trimmed to some small mound. However, any pruning will adversely have an impact on either the flowering or fruiting.
As any blueberry grower will tell you, Vaccinium plants favor acidic soil conditions. The modest ornamental species are most at residence when grown with other erica family members factories just like dwarf rhododendrons, evergreen azaleas, ericas, callunas and pieris.
The native New Zealand Gaultheria species are exciting vegetation to combine with Vaccinium delavayi.
Other little native berrying plants, especially individuals in the epacris family, also make very good companions. An alpine rockery with great berrying types of Pentachondra pumila, Leucopogon fraseri, Cyathodes empetrifolia, Gaultheria crassa and Vaccinium delavayi could be full of interest and colour all through the year.
Try looking within the perennials in addition to between the shrubs, as it is typically sold at an extremely small dimension and tends to obtain lumped in while using the rockery perennials.

If you intend to grow a vegetable garden it is a nice idea to think about adding some fruit to your plans. You’ll find there is nothing simpler to plant than a few blackberry bushes.

The next time you are out walking be on the lookout for them. They’re easy to spot once you understand what to look for. Their most individual trait is the thorns that reach from their branches. It is useful to remember where you have seen the blackberry bushes in order that you are able to pick the tasty berries which they supply. The fruits normally ripen on the plants in towards the end of the summer. They come into flower with sweet-smelling white flowers in the spring. Blackberry bushes can be found throughout North America and many additional countries with an appropriate environment. They yield the very best berries if found in the full sun, although you can come across them located in shaded places also.

Blackberry bushes can often be found close to raspberry bushes in the wild. Although wild blackberry bushes produce smaller berries than the blackberry bushes you plant from the nursery, the wild berries tend to be sweeter. It is important to watch for poison ivy which frequently grows within the same areas as blackberry bushes. Poison Ivy rash is the price that many berry pickers pay when trying to pick the berries.

The situation of natural blackberry bushes were marked and remembered by the Native Americans so that they could harvest them each year. They used the berries as food, but in addition they used them to dye animal skins to make a richer, darker colour.

The first settlers used blackberries to treat a number of illnesses. They were particularly useful for respiratory illnesses and coughing. The fruit is also used to produce a rich colored, sweet wine by lots of people who like to produce home made wines. The overall favourite use for these sweet, delicious berries, though, is blackberry jam. They also make a delicious pie, if you do not mind the seeds.

If you are thinking of growing blackberries in your yard it is best to place them along the parameter where there isn’t a lot of people traffic. This is to avoid being scratched by the sharp, long thorns. The bushes must be pruned after they are done fruiting. They need to be trimmed back to about 18″ above the ground. This is done to prevent them from growing the taller runners that are inclined to have more thorns than berries on them.

If you’re going to plant several bushes be sure you allow enough space so that you don’t get so scratched when picking the fruits. Regardless of how near the bushes are to each other picking blackberries is a job that requires wearing a long-sleeved shirt. Blackberry bushes also have a long life span so you’ll want to keep this in mind when picking an area to plant them.

Should you be thinking about g rowing tomatoes, no matter whether it’s for the earnings of selling them, or just for having your own fresh tomatoes accessible, you are probably pondering if you ought to plant heirloom tomatoes or maybe hybrid tomatoes.

Heirloom tomato plants are tomatoes which have been in cultivation for a minimum of half a century. Of course, these kind of tomatoes ended up being entirely unique and also limited to primarily 1 and / or two home gardens within the past. This approach made these kinds of tomatoes quite hard to find and attractive to home gardeners that wished to maintain the traditional feature of the heirloom tomato.

Hybrid tomatoes will be tomatoes which were cross-pollinated by way of 2 or more types. This method helps to make the hybrids much more resistant to pests and diseases.

There are actually major differences concerning both of these different kinds of tomatoes. For example, heritage tomatoes possess a more satisfying taste when compared with hybrids. They also have fewer seeds, and come in a significant number of colors, sizes, and textures. In hybrid tomatoes, the flavour suffered, in addition to they aren’t nearly as scrumptious. In addition, considering heirloom tomato plants are open-pollinated, you may preserve the seeds every single year rather than requiring you to purchase new hybrid tomato seeds each and every year.

You will find a couple of drawbacks to raising heirlooms, however. The primary problem is that heirloom tomatoes are certainly not resistant to major tomato diseases or unwanted insects. In addition they usually do not have as much fruit as the hybrids can.

Here are a few heirloom tomato varities:

Big Rainbow – One of dozens of big fruited yellow-colored tomatoes having red swirls, which has a mild, sweet flavor. Hillbilly, below, is another.

Black Krim – A dark red to dark brown tomato typically reported in seed catalogs as having come by way of the particular “island of Krim” on the Black Sea.

Brandywine – A fabulous sizeable fruited, pink variety grown on strong potato leaf plants.

Cherokee Purple – Only one from the really very first known “black”, or even deep dusky rose colored tomatoes that are becoming so in demand. A good exceptional flavored, high yielding choice, although is not strictly an heirloom.

Green Zebra – Frequently identified as an heirloom, it really is not. It’s an open-pollinated tomato selectively bred from four heirloom varieties.

Hillbilly – It’s known in standard leaf as well as potato leaf types. See Big Rainbow variety above.

Jubilee – A large yielding, golden fruit.

Lillian’s Yellow Heirloom – Just one among the few vivid yellow fruited types, and the only one that has potato leaf foliage, this type is really a tasty, full flavorful tomato that is very meaty, having very few seeds. It is inclined to often be a late spring season type.

Mortgage Lifter – One among the even more famous heirlooms due to it has a fanciful history. Typically the enormous pinkish fruit are sweet as well as delicious.

Traveler also known as Arkansas Traveler – A good open pollinated pinkish tomato within the 6 ounce range. Yet another tomato typically described as an heirloom, although by many descriptions it is officially not really.

If you are a home gardener, the very best tomato which you could plant would certainly end up being the heirloom, because of its excellent flavor. Hybrids are usually better geared to the large growers who tend to be simply looking for the profit.
