You will find many explanations why people choose to pursue growing vegetables like a hobby. Many people feel it’s a soothing way to lessen their stress levels. Many people just enjoy growing their very own food.

Others get satisfaction from understanding that they are fully aware where a few of their meals are originating from. Regardless of what your causes of wanting to consider growing vegetables, it’s an extremely rewarding hobby.

Many people even choose to try and have cash with their growing vegetables. You may make some extra money by selling your veggies in a local farmer’s market like the ones we have here in Moncton & Dieppe New Brunswick or kerbside stand, or you can test to market your produce to some local nutrition store or restaurant.

When you are planning your vegetable garden, you have to select how large you would like a garden to become. You might be enticed to purchase a large number of different veggies and many types of types, but this might be more work than you’re really ready for.

First, you need to make a listing of all the different veggies you’d prefer to plant. Write lower something that involves mind. Take it easy if you’ll have enough time to plant or take proper care of something, or whether you really can afford it, just write lower everything you are interested in.

Once you’ve completed your list, you’ll start thinning it lower. The initial step to thinning your list lower would be to eliminate anything that exist in your area in a reasonable cost. Taters and cabbage, for instance, are often very affordable in many locations.

Then you definitely should eliminate anything that exist in your area that won’t visit a significant improvement in flavor within the store-bought version. Again, cabbage and taters most likely won’t taste considerably different should you grow them yourself.

What you need to possess in your list may be the produce you cannot get in your area, is usually too costly to buy, or would taste considerably better when grown in your garden. For instance, you might want to grow fresh herbal treatments since they’re very costly in shops.

You might like to grow tomato plants because it may be very difficult to get tomato plants that taste good in shops. And you might like to grow a number of niche lettuces which are difficult to find in your area, or are usually a little costly.

Many people can’t handle taking care of an extremely large garden. It’s effort. It may be very relaxing, but it may be back-breaking are employed in intolerable warmth. You need to deal with grime, bugs, warmth, bending, lugging, tugging, hoeing, and weeding.

In could be miserable work should you produce a garden that’s bigger than you’re ready to handle. Should you overload, your fascinating hobby can rapidly are a nightmare. So make sure to choose only individuals types that you really believe you’ll enjoy, and that you can’t locate fairly easily in your area.

Should you only eat peas once monthly, don’t plant an entire row! Should you dislike tomato plants, don’t plant them simply because you believe you need to for whatever reason. Many people plant things believe that look pretty within the seed catalog, despite the fact that they are fully aware they won’t benefit from the produce!

Take care not to get caught up. It’s tempting to plant among every number of tomato, or six different types of all kinds of peppers. Individuals seed catalogs are beautiful, but ensure that it stays realistic!

We’ve only had a vegetable garden, that wasn’t just a container garden, for a couple of years now and we are loving it more each year. The garden also seems to get a bit bigger each year as well. Eventually we would like it to use most of the property on the south side of our lot as vegetable garden.

We’ve learned new things about gardening each year, like our first year we learned that the direction your plant your vegetables can make a difference. We planted our first garden north to south which caused rain water to run down the rows and eroded a lot of top soil. So, lesson learned and the following year we planted east to west instead.

We had also planted corn and found that it blocked the sunlight once it reached a certain height so the following year planted it on the east side of the garden so that it would not block the rest of the garden. So now the corn is on the opposite side.

This year I am paying attention to the height of my veggies and will try to plant them so they don’t block anything.

The garden has been under water since the snow has been melting and only accessible to the ducks flying over. However after more than a week of having a swimming pool in the yard the ground has softened enough to allow it to drain.

This morning it almost dried on the surface. Maybe I will be able to make it a couple of feet wider this week end.

Our little garden is only 5″ x 18″ right now but that bigger than when we started. Maybe I can dig it so that it’s 6″ wide and if my son helps maybe even wider.

We still have lots of time to get our garden ready but if I have learned anything over the years I have learned that time flies and then it’s gone. So I like to get things prepared well in advance if at all possible.

I was looking through EzineArticles.com today, looking for a few good articles about vegetable gardening and found this article. I thought you would like it. We are already discovering benefits from having our own vegetable garden.

There are lots of benefits you can get from having your own vegetable garden. You’re more safe with the food you eat, because you’re the one planting them and you can see the growth process of your plants everyday. From planting to harvesting, you’re all there morning and afternoon until you reap your sacrifices and see what you’ve endeavored.

There’s no substitute of overwhelming joy you’ll feel when you see your yummy tomatoes, lush green lettuce, red sweet pepper, and other plants in your garden growing healthy bearing fruits and dark green leaves.

What a magnificent feeling you can imagine when you’re in your garden looking at your plants greeting you with their vigorous growth formation.

I have enumerated some simple tips you can follow for your vegetable garden.

Planting Area. At least you’ve a space in your home to plant. I mean, any available space can be utilized for planting. You can use your pathways, windowsill, garage, anyplace whatsoever.

Available Time. Gardening needs your time, not that you’ll devote all your efforts there. If you can utilize at least 1 -2 hours a day, that’s enough to have your garden up and running.

Security. Security here, means that your garden should be free from outside encroachment; like astray animals, and other invaders. Your garden should be fenced if possible to avoid trouble later on.

Public Relation. As a home gardener, you should always be on top of the situation to be in good terms with your neighbors and other people in your community. Based on my experience, my garden is just along the roadside surrounded with lots of bystanders especially during the night. But, I’m glad that my plants are safe and no one dares to steal. My formula is this, during my harvest, I give to my neighbors and anyone who ask, I always give them. That’s my secret.

Available Planting Materials. Now a days, you don’t need to worry where to get your planting materials. There are lots of agriculture stores who sells all your vegetables seeds. You can select whether you want a hybrid or an open pollinated seeds. Select the hybrid seeds if you want an early maturing fruits disease-free or an open pollinated for long season crops.

Climate. Vegetables grows in different sets of climatic conditions. You should be familiar with growth pattern of some common vegetables. Some tolerates summer, others during winters, falls and springs. Seek advice from your agriculture extension agents what plant grows well in this particular conditions.

Water Requirements. Water is the lifeblood of all living things. Vegetables responses well with enough supply of water. Make it your priority to provide a continuous supply of water in your vegetable garden.

There are lots more you can incorporate here, but I only narrow it down to these 7 tips as the most important ones for you to start your vegetable gardening.

Happy gardening!

Planning Organic Vegetable Gardening in New Brunswick

Have desire to grow your own vegetable garden? We went for many years before we were in a situation where we could have our own vegetable garden and now we do and I just double the size from last year.

Learning a few things about vegetable gardening will make the task more enjoyable, to the point where it may well become your favourite hobbies.

Follow a few steps before you plant anything and you will have a healthier vegetable garden with less work.

Steps To Planting Your First Garden

1. Location, Location, Location

Location is important. You need sunlight and good drainage. These are two vital components to a good veggie garden. Anything else you need for your garden can be added.

Steer clear of trees if possible as their roots can rob nutrients from the soil and in the summer their branches can over shade your garden, blocking that vital sunlight. Like our first vegetable garden.

2. Preparing The Soil

Our vegetable garden used to be part of our lawn and the soil beneath the turf was very dense clay that wouldn’t drain for days after a heavy rain. But we wanted a vegetable garden so that didn’t stop us.

First we removed the sod with as little dirt as possible. We even let it dry in the yard so we could pound the excess dirt off it.

Next I dug the entire plot to about a foot deep and mixed in fresh topsoil we have from composting and also added a few bags of peatmoss to help break the soil into something workable.

We tested the garden once we had added the compost and peatmoss to see how well it drained and found we had improved it considerable. So now it drains in hours instead of days.

3. Know Your Local Planting Zones

There are a lot of vegetables one can grow but you need to decide what you like the most, making sure it will grow in your growing zone. For this you can look up the growing zones for where you live.

We live in New Brunswick Canada so we looked that up along with the phrase ‘growing zone’ or ‘vegetable growing zone’.

Note: We decided we wanted to grow a few things that needed a longer growing periods, so I started those inside a couple of months early so they were well started before planting them outside.

4. How to Maintain Your Vegetable Garden

A vegetable garden doesn’t maintain itself very well and will soon be taken over by weeds if not watched. Keep a head of the weeds and it becomes rather easy to maintain. On the other hand leave it for a week or two and you may start to see the vegetable plants start to suffer.

We have our rows of vegetables running north to south for a couple of reasons.

We wanted each plant to get as much sun as possible.

Our garden is on a slight incline so we planted the rows so that the rain would not erode the garden.

I mentioned this but it’s important so I will mention it again. Your vegetable garden must drain well or your veggie roots will drown the plants.

We added compost and peatmoss but we also set the rows so the water would drain but not erode the garden.

5. Know Your Garden Pests

Take the time to learn about the pest that like what you grow so you can learn how to control pests organically.

Completing each task doesn’t take too long, especially when it’s planned. We on the other hand didn’t learn before we started our first vegetable garden. Instead I just started digging in so we ended up with a lot more work than we needed so learn from my mistakes and plan your vegetable garden before planting it and happy gardening.

I have only been vegetable gardening for a couple of years but we are learning every year. This past summer we tried our hand at growing Summer Squash, Buttercup Squash and Zucchini. The experience was a good one even though we didn’t get a lot of squash as I kinda grew them all too close together. I call that a learning experience and by next spring we will have a garden three times the size to accommodate the quantity we would like to grow.

I learned after I had already planted them but I should have planed the squash plants about 3 to 4 feet apart. Now don’t laugh at me but I planted all mine about a foot apart and it didn’t take long before they just became one big pile of leaves. I’m surprised we got any results that were positive but we did and I am happy for this year. Next year I will give them a chance to impress me even more.

The blossoms are very tasty when you fill them with cheese, batter them and deep fry them. Mmmm good

I think that I will be able to start digging up our new garden and making the raised beds for our summer squash while it’s cool in the fall. Last year I waited until spring and it got really hot early so I didn’t get to increase the size of my vegetable garden like had planned. Usually here in New Brunswick we get late frost but not this year. So it’s going to get done this fall.

Families are trying to save money any way they can, and gardening may be one of the best ways to do that! You can grow healthy food right in your backyard. Not only will you be able to walk outside for fresh vegetables or flowers, you will know exactly what has gone into the food your family is eating. You can grow healthy organic food just steps from your kitchen window!

Start the gardening process by planning what kind of garden you would like. Do you want herbs, flowers vegetables, or a mix of all three? If you pick out flowers, do you want annuals that need to be planted every year, or perennials that have a shorter blooming period but will come back next year? Also consider the region in which you live. Some plants are more likely to thrive in certain areas of the land. Often seed packets indicate which areas of the country produce the best results. Your local gardening center will also be able to point you in the right direction.

Once you decide what you want to plant, you need to find the best spot in your yard. Look for a place with easy access to water, proper drainage and direct sun. Consider putting the garden in a spot that you look at every day, such as outside a kitchen or bathroom window. It will not only be a lovely sight, but will help remind you when the garden needs water and weeding.

Now that you’ve chosen the spot, it is time to start digging. It is important to find the right time for this job – you can ruin the soil’s structure if you begin digging when it is too wet or too dry. A good rule of thumb is to dig only when the soil is moist enough to create a dirt ball in your hand, but dry enough that the ball will fall apart when dropped. Use a spade or spade fork to turn over eight to twelve inches of soil, and mix in organic matter as you work. Continue to mix organic matter with the soil for approximately three weeks before planting your seeds. This will improve your soil’s water storage and soil buffering. Test your soil’s pH before you plant. Some plants prefer more acidic soil, some prefer more alkaline, and some are happiest in neutral soil. acquiring the right soil pH may mean the difference between a thriving garden and failing one.

While you are improving the soil in your garden, start shopping for plants. Visit your local gardening center, read magazines and brochures, or surf the Internet to find inspiration for what you would like to plant in your backyard. There are plenty of annuals, perennials and vegetables that are great for beginning gardeners. Cosmos, marigolds, impatiens, geraniums, sunflowers and zinnias are perfect first-time annuals. Beginner’s perennials include lambs ear, lazy susans, coneflowers and daylilies. If you are interested in vegetables, consider planting lettuce, peppers, tomatoes or cucumbers in your first garden.

If you purchased small plants instead of seeds, gradually introduce them to bright sunlight. Many greenhouses and gardening stores keep their plants inside and away from direct sun. Start by putting the plants on a covered porch, then move them to an area that gets sunlight for a portion of the day and finally plant them in the ground.

Water your plants only weekly, at first. Use a soaker hose in the mornings for the best results. Any more water and you will run the risk of drowning your plants. Once they are well established, water according to the guidelines for each plant, as well as your area’s rainfall.

Don’t forget to keep your garden tools clean! While this may seem counterintuitive since you use the tools in dirt, it is important. Dirty gardening tools can attract microbes that will harm your plants. Using clean gardening tools is one of the easiest ways to keep your plants free from disease and infestation.

If a backyard garden sounds too ambitious, consider container gardening or square foot gardening. Container gardens are a great way to reuse old porcelain bowls, tires or other items you no longer need. First, decide whether you would like to keep your plants inside or outside, then you can choose the containers you want. When picking a container, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. The height of the plant at maturity, whether it needs partial or full sun and the length of the bloom time are all factors that will help you decide which kind of container you will need.

Square foot gardening is another great option. These are small, intensely planted gardens. It is a form of organic gardening done in closely planted, raised beds. Square foot gardening is a fine option for people who live in areas with bad soil, first-time gardeners or those with disabilities that prevent them from caring for a traditional garden. Square foot gardens call for less weeding, less water and fewer pesticides than conventional gardens.

Now you are ready to begin planting! Gardening is a fun way to connect with nature and to give your family fresh vegetables, herbs and flowers to enjoy all summer long.

If you’ve decided to start vegetable gardening this year, then you are among the 7 million households that are beginning their first gardening experience too. More and more Americans are looking for fresher, safer, better quality and cheaper food that can be cultivated right in their own backyards. Tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, beans and carrots are some of the most popular varieties. Before you begin, here are some gardening tips on planning, implementing and maintaining a bountiful garden.

The first thing you’ll need to do when creating a vegetable garden is picking the most suitable location and size. Firstly, make sure your location gets a lot of sunshine. Most vegetables should have around six to eight hours of direct sunlight each day for the best results. If you have a shadier location, you can place your lettuce and spinach there. As you assess your yard, make certain to take into account the shadows cast by the deciduous trees and the house throughout specific times of the day.

Ideally, the garden will be handily situated in close proximity to the kitchen, so you can tend to it with less effort and bring in your crop without walking long distances. The most satisfactory soil will be loaded with nutrients and drain properly, so you might need to add organic compost and use the right tools to aerate the earth before you start.

When choosing what goes into your garden, you’ll need to consider how much space the crops you want take up. Vegetable gardening items like corn, winter squash and tomatoes tend to take up a lot of room, so you’ll need a 20 x 20 garden at least. If you want to grow a few herbs, peppers, cucumbers and greens, a 12 x 16 plot should be sufficient. Garden guides from the National Gardening Association recommend growing plants in succession in three foot wide beds with 18-inch paths between each row. It’s also a good idea to add a few flowers (such as marigolds) into your garden to add some beauty, deter pests and attract helpful pollinating bees.

The last step before planting is to feed the soil and make it ready for productive vegetable gardening. Whatever the plants take up out of the soil, you’ll need to ensure microorganisms or soil puts back in. Several inches of compost or natural manure fertilizer usually does the trick. For a 12 x 16 (200 square-foot) garden, use about 75 pounds of commercial compost or horse manure. If you’re using uncultivated soil, the best garden advice is to apply five pounds of organic fertilizer with 5% nitrogen for every 200 square feet. Rake the fertilizer into the first few inches of top soil to break up clay clumps and create a nutritious environment for growing plants.

Eating healthfully doesn’t have to be expensive when you plant a vegetable garden. From container vegetable gardening to edible landscaping, you’ll find the information you need at the Vegetable Garden Site.

It’s funny about giving out tips, once you know them you need to share them so others can enjoy the same success without so much trial and error. That’s why I started this vegetable gardening tips blog, to share.

Once I started gardening I found so much of the stresses in life just faded away while I was putter around in my gardens. I enjoyed it so much that I started a backyard gardening tips blog to share my experiences. Later I started vegetable gardening and found that it was a good stress release also but it also puts food on our table that is organic and we didn’t have to pay a grocery store for it.

Note: My wife and I were more than surprised at the difference our produce tasted compared to the stuff we buy at the grocery store. Our first experience was fresh strawberries andwe were speechless. Needless to say we didn’t really share any of those strawberries, maybe next year.

Once winter slammed into us I thought it was a great time to start a vegetable gardening tips blog to share what we are learning as we go because really we are still vegetable gardening newbies.

Fear Freezes So Many Potential Gardeners

We put off vegetable gardening for a long time because I just figured it was too hard and needed too much care but that was just fear of failure. Once a friend of my wife’s gave us some useful tips and advice we start and haven’t looked back.

We started in our first year planting one strawberry plant in a big pot and a couple of tomatoes in big pots as well. It was great but they soon grew out of their containers and I had to put them in the ground. They all survived although we were told to leave the strawberries without eating the fruit until the second year. By the second year that one little strawberry plant had turned into a patch of about 16ft by 3 feet and gave us so many berries.

The tomatoes just kept producing tomatoes until the fall and all the leaves were gone. It was amazing how many tomatoes we had and we did share many tomatoes.

The following year I started my first garden patch and then I was completely hooked.

I had a lot of fun learning about vegetable gardening in that first year and even started a garden recipe blog to share some of the recipes we used with our fruits and veggies throughout the summer.
